Driving in Other States FAQ

 

We have received many inquiries about driving in other states when only having a permit or when visiting from another country. Here are the general rules and answers these FAQ

Can I drive in other states

You must have a state license to drive in any state, unless you are a resident of another state or Canadian province and have a valid driver license from there.

Residents of most other countries may also drive with valid licenses from their home nations .

The minimum driving age in most states is 16 to 18 The state you are driving in has precidence. If your home state allows you to drive at 15, but you are planning on visiting another state whose minimum age is 16 you can not drive in that state..

If you become a permanent state resident, the law requires you to obtain a state license within 30 days and turn in your out-of-state license.

With a few exceptions, it is illegal to hold both a state license and a license from another state.

It's also a violation of Federal law to hold more than one commercial driver license (CDL).
